DISTANCES & ROUTE:

  • Gourmet Gravel Santa Barbara is a true Mixed-Terrian ride that scales both sides of the beautiful & scenic Santa Ynez Mountain Range including the iconic Gibraltar Road climb (you get to descend it too). Starting and finishing in downtown Santa Barbara the 60 mile route has over 25% gravel roads and 8,000 feet of elevation change. The route is sure to challenge all who ride.

TERRAIN:

  • Riding out of and back into the Californian Riveria on our route, 99% of the climbing will be finished by mile 42. This achieves almost 8,000 ft of climbing in those 42 miles with some sections topping out at over 16% and an average of almost 200 ft elevation gain per mile. The scenery is on par with the route and we encourage all participants to stop and take advantage of the views offered.
  • The roads for Gourmet Gravel Santa Barbara are generally in good to great condition, although some gravel sections may be a little rough come November. As we approach event day, our website will be updated with current course conditions, specifically the condition of the gravel.

EQUIPMENT:

  • BIKE: Gravel bike, Cross bike or hardtail MTB. Only recommend MTB if you are new to gravel or don't have a drop bar bike with appropriate gearing. Road bikes discouraged due to gearing limitations and tire clearance.
  • TIRES: 40c width tires are the preferred mixed terrain tires of the Santa Barbara Gravel Posse. TUBELESS highly recommended
  • GEARING: Recommend at least 1:1 gearing (you will be happy about this climbing up Arroyo Burro Rd). We consistently ride lighter grears than 1:1 with the 1x set up using 40x42 or 42x44. With a 2x set up a 34x36 works well. You will not likely run out of gears going downhill.

RIDE SUPPORT:

Gourmet Gravel Santa Barbara is a fully supported non-timed participation event, We will have multiple fully staffed & stocked aid stations and a crew of motorcycles to keep an eye on things. Participants who wish to have a finishing time can use Strava or similar.

POST RIDE FESTIVITIES:

Due to multiple requests we have decided to add a shorter road ride to the Gourmet Gravel Santa Barbara weekend. Many folks want to be part of the the festivities but are not up to the demands of the full GGSB. This is a non-supported road loop through the beautiful foothills of Santa BArbara. You can still be part of the post ride activities at Telegraph Brewing Company including locally crafted beer, gourmet food and our kick-ass raffle.

Parking in the "Junk Zone" of the East Side of Santa Barbara is street parking. Please be sure to read applicapble parking signs where you choose to park to avoid parking citations. There is plenty of parking in town, please visit City of Santa Barbara parking info website for locations and rates.

DISTANCES & ROUTE:

  • Petit GG sans Gravel  came about after multiple requests for a route that still showcases the beauty of Santa Barbara for those who are not up to the demands of the full GGSB route. Our partners a SB Bike (who are also one of our beneficiaries) suggested using one of the routes of their partners, Cycle Cal Coast. What better way for a collaboration to work than to collaborate! We added to one of their most popular routes to allow for the start/finish to remain at Telegraph Brewing Company. To our delight, the route just happens to completely follow one of our most favorite roads in Santa Barbara (Mountain Drive) which by no coincidence is also part of the full GGSB route.

TERRAIN:

  • The 18+ miles of Petit GG sans Gravel has a total elevation gain/loss of 1,200 ft, offers views of the Pacific riding along Cabrillo Blvd that can only be outdone by those along the iconic Mountain Drive.
  • The roads for Petit GG sans Gravel  are generally in good to great condition. As always it is important to keep ones head up any always point out any potential obstacles to fellow riders.

EQUIPMENT:

  • BIKE: A standard road is perfect for this route, however the ride will be equally enjoyable on a hybrid or mountain bike with slicks.
  • GEARING: The route is quite tame, however there are a few uphill pitches that approach 11%. They don't last long, but may sting a little

RIDE SUPPORT:

Petit GG sans Gravel is the little sibling to the full Gourmet Gravel Santa Barbara and both are non-timed participation events. Due to the nature of both rides, Petit GG sans Gravel with not have any aid stations but all participants will be able to partake in all the pre and post ride amenities. We wil have course marshals on bike for the ride.

Telegraph Brewing CompanY

Each of Telegraph's brews is carefully crafted in small batches in their downtown Santa Barbara brewery which is the start and finish of gourmet Gravel Santa Barbara. Telegraph Brewing Company respectfully employs brewing techniques proven over the centuries while eschewing modern shortcuts that might make their lives easier but inevitably lead to less distinctive beers.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

DETAILS:

LOCATION:

  • Start & Finish at ol'Republic Brewery, 124 Argall Way, Nevada City CA 95959

START TIME:

  • 8:00AM Saturday 17 June 2017

PACKET PICK-UP:

  • 5:30 - 8:00PM Friday 16 June 2017. Welcome party and packet pick-up - ol' Republic Brewery, 124 Argall Way, Nevada City, CA 95959
  • Day of packet pick-up 6:30-7:30AM ol' Republic Brewery, 124 Argall Way, Nevada City, CA 95959

PARKING:

We will have designated parking for Gourmet Gravel Nevada City in the dirt lot behind ol' Republic Brewery. Please DO NOT park in the California Organics, SPD Market or any other local merchant parking lots. Access  to the designated lot is through the main lot of 'ol Republic Brewery. Parking is frequently a challenge in our small Western Sierra Nevada town and we request that you respect the other merchants by not parking in their private lots.

TWO DISTANCES & ROUTES:

  • The MOTHER LODE - 49 miles and 6,900+ ft of up/down. A mix of paved and dirt roads with the majority being Nevada County maintained dirt roads northeast of Historic Downtown Nevada City. The MOTHERLOAD covers all of The NUGGET route.
  • The NUGGET - 29 miles and 4,000+ ft of up/down. A mix of paved and dirt roads with the majority being Nevada County maintained dirt roads northeast of Historic Downtown Nevada City

TERRAIN:

  • Riding in/out of Historic Downtown Nevada City the average elevation gain or loss is 150 ft per mile when riding mixed terrain. This is only an average and some sections are closer to 200 ft per mile with sustained pitches over 18%. We consistantly average between 10-12 mph on these routes.
  • The roads for Gourmet Gravel Nevada City are generally in good to great condition, although some sections can be a little rough. As did most of NorCal, Nevada County had a very wet winter and as of early spring we have a fair amount of rain ruts and potholes. GOOD NEWS! As of our last route recon on May 20th, Nevada County has started to blade the roads. Rock Creek, Grizzly Hill, Moores Flat, North Bloomfield (from Moores Flat to Snow Tent), Snow Tent and both sides of Purdon Crossing have all been "fixed". The route is a lot more smooth than in late winter/early spring
  • Some of the descents can be a bit challenging as far as steepness goes. As always, we recommend caution, especially when descending Backbone Road (MOTHER LODE route only) and Purdon Road (both routes) heading down to the second and final crossing of the Scenic South Yuba River

EQUIPMENT:

  • BIKE: Gravel bike, Cross bike or hardtail MTB. Recommend MTB if you are new to gravel or don't have a drop bar bike with appropriate gearing and tires. Road bikes discouraged due to gearing limitations and tire clearance.
  • TIRES: 40c width tires are the preferred mixed terrain tires of the Nevada City Gravel Posse. TUBELESS highly recommended
  • GEARING: Recommend at least 1:1 gearing (you will be happy about this climbing out of Purdon Crossing). We consistently ride lighter grears than 1:1 with the 1x set up using 40x42 or 42x44. With a 2x set up a 34x36 works well. You will not likely run out of gears going downhill.
